Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Gentlemen’s Bow Tie Raceday has become an annual sensation in Hong Kong. This year, Oriental Watch Company will join hands with The Hong Kong Jockey Club once again to present the Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Gentlemen’s Bow Tie Raceday which will be held on 20th October 2019 at Sha Tin Racecourse. Racegoers are invited to attend the races in attires adorned with bow ties or bow-related elements to grace the event with elegance and glamour. Carrying on the tradition started from last year, Oriental Watch Company invited eight distinctive gentlemen in the city, featuring elegant attire matched with a bow tie and a spectacular timepiece to interpret the virtues of gentleman, calling for everyone to support the Bow Tie Raceday.

The eight Oriental Fine Gentlemen are Mr. Dennis Yeung, Managing Director of Oriental Watch Company, Mr. Tony Chang, Managing Director of Ascot Chang, Mr. Justin Chang, Deputy Managing Director of Ascot Chang, Mr. Frankie Lor, renowned horse trainer, Mr. Lok Lor, personal assistant of Mr. Frankie Lor, Mr. Vincent Ho, renowned jockey and 2018/2019 Tony Cruz Award winner, and Mr. Alex Fong and Mr. Kevin Chu, renowned actors. Of the eight Oriental Fine Gentlemen, Mr. Dennis Yeung is the second-generation successor of Oriental Watch Company, one of Hong Kong’s most established watch retailers, Mr. Tony Chang and Mr. Justin Chang epitomise inheritance in bespoke tailoring, while the two Mr. Lor’s make a much-admired father-and-son duo in the horseracing sector. Together with Mr. Vincent Ho, the star of the new generation jockey, and Mr. Alex Fong and Mr. Kevin Chu, both swimmers-turned-actors, the Gentlemen perfectly exemplify this year’s theme “There is a Gentleman in Every Man: Honour and Legacy”.

Mr. Dennis Yeung remarks, “We are honoured to work hand in hand with The Hong Kong Jockey Club for five consecutive years to hold the Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Gentlemen’s Bow Tie Raceday. As a professional watch retailer, Oriental Watch Company has an exclusive perception of time. Time is equally crucial in horseracing as every second counts in a race. This shared understanding of time makes us the perfect match for each other. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all racegoers to support Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Gentlemen’s Bow Tie Raceday by attending the races on 20th October in attires adorned with bow ties or bow-related elements.”

Inheriting the family business from his father, Mr. Tony Chang is preparing his son to carry on the over-half-a-century heritage. He says, “Ascot Chang was established by my father Mr. Ascot Chang in 1953. My son Justin and I are now carrying on the business of perfecting gentleman culture started by my father. We believe that true beauty will withstand the test of time and should be passed on from generation to generation. The theme of Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Gentlemen’s Bow Tie Raceday 2019 ‘There is a Gentleman in Every Man: Honour and Legacy’ echoes with our own beliefs. It is a pleasure to work with a partner that shares the same value with us.”

Mr. Justin Chang, third generation successor of Ascot Chang, shares, “We believe that every man is unique and is charming is his own way. Only one-of-a-kind garments, specifically made for each gentleman’s unique physique, lifestyle and taste can bring out the particular demeanour of a man. Bespoke tailoring is all about the fabrics, cutting and details, which coincidentally match with the virtues of a true gentlemen – authentic elegance from the inside out.”

Mr. Frankie Lor says, “I am much honoured to be invited as one of the eight Oriental Fine Gentlemen again. My son Lok is joining the ensemble this time, making it even more meaningful for both of us. I am often asked to share my insights in horse training. I would say, working side by side with my son, Lok, and my team, to make sure that the horses would race in their best form is something that pleases me the most, and that I regard as an achievement.

Mr. Lok Lor shares, “People would sometimes question whether giving up my cosmetic business to work in my father’s stable means abandoning my career as a stylist, or challenge me whether I am doing this just to inherit my family legacy as my grandfather had also worked in the horseracing field. What has made me so determined to follow my father’s footsteps is his character and attitude. My father is well-known for his professionalism. If there is a role model of a true gentleman to learn from, my father would be that of mine.”

Mr. Vincent Ho says, “Horseracing is a sport of self-discipline, which is very similar to the virtues of a gentleman. In daily life, a jockey has to monitor his weight, live and eat with restrictions, schedules and routines. In a race, a jockey has to focus both physically and mentally, so as to maximize the potential of the horse under a very competitive environment.”

One of the finest examples of swimmer-turned-actor, Mr. Alex Fong remarks, “My training as an athlete taught me the qualities of a true gentleman – dedication, modesty and confidence, both for self and others – being a gentleman is an attitude. It is a pleasure to be invited as one of the Fine Oriental Gentlemen. Please support Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Gentlemen’s Bow Tie Raceday 2019 and attend races on 20th October in attires adorned with bow ties or bow-related elements.”

Up-and-rising actor Mr. Kevin Chu, who was also a swimming athlete, remarks, “I am particularly moved by this year’s theme ‘There is a Gentleman in Every Man: Honour and Legacy’, which presented me with another perspective to perceive the true meaning of being a gentleman – honour and legacy that withstand the test of time and being inherited generation by generation. This is a benchmark as well as a goal, constantly reminding us to discover the gentlemen spirit deep inside our heart and live up to the true meaning of ‘There is a Gentleman in Every Man’.”

As tailoring partner of the event, Ascot Chang has provided one-on-one bespoke consultations and tailoring services to the eight Fine Oriental Gentlemen to ensure that each gentleman will look perfect when interpreting the gentleman spirit. Internationally known for his exacting attention to workmanship, detail and fit, Ascot Chang believed that clothing should complement an individual’s figure, lifestyle and tastes while maintaining an excellence in quality and design. For the suits of the Fine Oriental Gentlemen, Ascot Chang took inspiration from classic British tailoring style.  The “Super 150s” grade wool that was selected for this partnership was specifically sourced from a historic woollen mill in Huddersfield that produces some of England’s finest fabrics. For this unique sponsorship, each Ascot Chang suit also carries subtle details that are a nod towards the British heritage of horseracing. Each suit is designed with a “ticket pocket”, a small extra pocket above the right waist pocket of each jacket to salute a tradition: Before the industrial revolution, British gentleman who rode on horseback would store their coins in this smaller pocket for easy access while in riding position. When trains became the favoured mode of transport into the cities, this pocket was adapted as a convenient place to keep tickets and bills, hence the name “ticket pocket”. Apart from the above-mentioned and many other details, over 20 detailed measurements were taken to ensure the precise fit of each bespoke suit. In addition, Ascot Chang prepared a personalized pocket square for each Oriental Fine Gentleman. Hand Monogrammed with their initials and a signature "Godolphin" horse head motif, these pocket squares provide the perfect finishing touch to each distinguished raceday outfit.
